The College Process at Darrow
As a college-preparatory school, Darrow
School’s college counseling emphasizes
helping students identify college options that appeal to their interests and
abilities.
Darrow graduates attend a wide range of educational institutions, such as small
liberal arts colleges; large state universities; and more specialized schools
of art, design, or music. The goal is to find the institution that best serves
a student’s interests and strengths.
The program is coordinated by our Director of College Counseling.
Under her guidance, students, with input from their families, research a variety
of colleges and universities and select several to which they apply. Students
works closely with the Director of College Counseling, who helps them gather
and prepare all necessary materials. Teachers, advisors, and tutors participate
in this process by providing support, assisting with essays, and writing
recommendations that provide a complete picture of the student’s academic
ability, commitment, motivation, and passion. During Family Weekends, we schedule sessions for parents to meet with the Director of College Counseling to learn more about the process and what is involved.
While the formal
process begins in earnest during a student’s junior year, from the moment they
set foot at Darrow, our underlying objective is to provide students with the
skills necessary to be academically successful college freshmen.
